What makes a flock of quality?

What is a quality flock?

Should the quality of backyard pet chooks always be measured against “The Show Standards” of “Heritage Pure Breeds?”

As breeds, I love Icelandics and Swedish Flower Hens. I love these Landrace birds that have been bred for their utility value in conjunction with their prettiness and unusual colours and feather patterns. I personally don't like chooks with pom pom hairdo’s or snow shoes for feet, or flocks of chooks that either look exactly the same, or vastly different!

What do other people think? I’m playing Devil’s Advocate. Can a flock of mutt-chooks ever be thought of as a quality flock?

Agree that it's perspective. A "quality" show flock will meet set standards. And it's quality should be judged according to those standards.
However, what is a quality backyard flock? Here is where things will change. For me, a quality "home" flock will be healthy, productive, and enjoyable. Now how I quantify these categories compared to others will differ as also will the categories themselves. I am not personally interested in show birds right now and see no reason to judge my birds based on the set "standard". Could both types of flock be mixed, absolutely. Will I ever get into show birds, possibly. But for now. My perception of "quality" is really based on how well I believe my flock is doing in general. To me as long as they remain happy healthy and productuve, they are a quality home flock.
