What materials do you use for your roof,

Airmom,
Wow! All of you that posted pics have such pretty coops and large runs. You will all probably laugh at mine.

What is wrong with that coop, it is a palace for your birds, does it keep them warm? dry? ya feed 'em?

That is all they need Mine is not that much bigger if it is at all. My coop is 4x8 the same size as a sheet of plywood. It is raised off the ground and the run is about two to three times that since I have a raised coop for them to go under, I count that as run size.
I am going to try to get a pic but I do not have a proper roof, duh that is why I am here.

I hope this works I am including my pic of my coop, now don't you laugh. I did it myself, but I am kinda proud of it.

I don't know why I can't make it larger I will keep trying, but this is it.

I used regular roofing shingles, I got them for free by dumpster diving at local construction sites.

I also used regular roofing shingles that I had used on my home. My coop matches my home as far as the roofing and the color since I used the same exterior paint.

Dawg, I would love to use shingles but they are to heavy for me, I don't have help. You would think they would leave me some leftover shingles when they did my roof, nooooo

I tried to get some but could not ick them up so i have to go another way

I constructed my roof out of 2X6 rafters, covered with 1/2" CDX. I boxed out a 6 inch overhang for the sides. Three sides have aluminum drip edge. That was then covered with 15# roofing felt. Because the pitch is so shallow I used 90# roll roofing in 4 foot rolls, which gave me three courses, and I rolled the roofing over the upper edge and nailed down on the front overhang.

It looks like you uploaded a thumbnail version. Do you want to try again to upload the fill size photo? I'd love to see a bigger photo because it looks ADORABLE from what I can see!

To answer your question, I just used regular roofing shingles. I love the idea of tin or that sun-tuf stuff though.

I finally did it, It is really a nice golden yellow and white, the dark little widow over the entrance should be white and I am making a nice door for them to enter. It was hard but worth it, it is sturdy and very heavy.

Thanks....

Mine is raised off the ground, too, so the run size is larger, not to mention it's a shady place for them which stays relatively dry making it an ideal place for their dustbaths. It's only open on the front door side inside the pen. The other three sides are wired up to keep the chickens in and predators out. I have a long pole (tall window washer that leaked more water on me than on the windows) that I use to get the occasional egg laid under the coop.

Churkenduse, your coop is GREAT! I wish I had known about nest boxes like yours. I don't think I could do that myself on my existing tin house coop, but maybe I could pay someone with some know-how to do it for me this spring or summer. It would be nice to be able to gather the eggs without going inside during bad weather especially. Does your laying box open from the outside? I've seen a few on this site that do. So many neat ideas on this site!
