I thought it was the exhibition, genetics, and breeding to the SOP forum.
I'm sure this is a genetics topic.
A lot of people would like to understand genetics better even if they're not breeding to the SOP.
Also sometimes when people start understanding genetics they start understanding breeding towards something which may end up leading them to breeding to the SOP and getting into showing. Around here showing has declined over the years and it would be nice to see the numbers headed in the other direction. Show people sometimes have the reputation of being snobbish it would also be nice to lose that and be look at as friendly and willing to help others.
I don't see any harm in topics like this in this section.

Or you could take your purebred Light Sussex cock and put him over a top quality pure Light Sussex hen and breed purebred Light Sussex. Then the discussion would belong in this particular forum. The variety could use more breeders.

You need a color expert. Find BYC folk: , nicalandia or Henk69 or tadkerson . Sonoransilkies is also great with color. They cruise the "general breed discussions" forum.
If you title your thread " calling color experts" , that should get attention.
To get red sex links you need to use a Light Sussex hen, not a Light Sussex cock.
A Light Sussex cock over a black and white barred bird will give you black sex links.
If you put a Light Sussex cock over a gold or red based hen, the chicks will look alike. No sex-linking. But when the birds are grown, the females will look like Light Sussex but the males will have yellow in their Hackles and saddle feathers. This cross does not breed true so has no useful purpose so is not popular.

As far as the forums go guess it would be nice if this one was strictly for purebred and SOP and they had a separate one for just general genetics. As it is now it does seem this is the best forum for genetic questions.

Go-ahead and laugh. If you had seen as many Light Sussex touted as "Beautiful" as I gave when they are sorry excuses for the variety, you would understand how I feel. This cock is better than most of them, while still not near top quality.
It's not funny when one is championing a variety that folk think is great just because of the color.
We need more people who understand that Sussex beauty is more than skin deep. It is the lovely, delicate balance between egg and meat virtues. The collection of smoothly articulated curves, blending into one another to form a silohuette that is pleasing to the eye as well as functional to the breeder. Light Sussex are much more than a pretty black and white bird!

@Sagey_7878 I can tell you really want to keep him... is his crowing an issue? Maybe you could try a no-crow collar and then no one will know you have him?? Just a suggestion.
On a side note... will someone please give @The Moonshiner an educator badge?! SERIOUSLY! He has a way of explaining genetics that is easy to understand (IMO). No confusing "fluff" (unless someone asks specifics) just a "here-is-what-you-got, this-is-what-you'll-get-and-why" answer. That is a lot easier for us newbies to understand than getting the entire genetics book thrown at us.

Hi there, yes crowing is the issue. My council does not allow roosters therefore it’s illegal. He is going today... I’ve tried a no crow collar but they don’t work very well.
