What more can I do for my 3 week Sneezing Tweetie? Will this pass or is she in trouble🥺🐥

Tweetie

Tweetie is my 3 1/2 wk old Salmon Favorelle chick who I just recently noticed with sneezing and guppy breathing over the past 2-3 days. I purchased her and six others last Thursday from a local chick breeder where I have purchased many pullets over the past few years with success. Very clean, good biocontainment practices and all chicks are vaccinated. There are 6 other clutch mates (another favorelle, 2 polish, a Wyandotte, Orpington and Sussex) who are all fine, no symptoms. Other than her respiratory symptoms, Tweetie is eating and drinking and appears just as active as her friends. Video shows chicks as comparison as well as environment. Only treatment is extra careful attention to temp and clean bedding, adding few drops of nutridrench to water and very small dab of vetrx under her wings 2x daily.

Thoughts?

Hard to know what's affecting her.
I'd give it another couple of days to see if symptoms resolve. Keep her nostrils wiped out the best you can.
If symptoms worsen, then you may need to treat with Tylosin, but she's quite young and the others don't have symptoms.

Thanks for this feedback. Did some more reading and am going down the "allergen" pathway...perhaps it's the fine pine shavings? Never had an issue before w chicks and this, but I read that sensitivities exist, so I ordered a hemp that is made for chick brooders {low dust, no dyes, etc}. Will be sure to add chick grit...and 🙏🏻🤞🏻🐤

Are there genetic disorders similar to Down’s Syndrome or Cystic Fibrosis in poultry?

My 10 week old Salmon Favorelle pullet definitely seems to have an inherited disorder and I can’t find any information.

Respiratory symptoms, retarded growth and potentially blindness? Looking for any information or insight…I love this little angel baby and just want to make sure that we are doing the best that we can for her…original video at beginning of thread at age 3 weeks, new videos posted from today. Please excuse the mess, still cleaning up after Hurricane Debby🐔🌀☔

Hopefully others will chime in.

Yes, there can be genetic and developmental disorders that affect poultry.
I don't think she's blind, she can pick out small pieces of food and pick them back up without missing.

She may fail as time goes by, hard to know. The best you can do is see that she's eating, crop is filling and fullish at night. She seems to interact with the others o.k.

As for the respiratory symptoms, she's had that all her life...perhaps underdeveloped air sacs and/or lungs...don't know.

She's very cute and all are obviously well loved.

Thank you. Yes, I’m prepared for a short life span 😔, maybe longer if we can transition her to a house chicken…not so sure how that would work with two German shepherds 🥺. I was certain that I was going to lose her the other day before the storm as humidity approached 100% and she was audibly wheezing, almost sounded like congestive heart failure (I’m a people nurse)…which is what really triggered me to the congenital pathway.

I’ve wanted this breed for so long and got two of them because I read that they do better in pairs😔

I had an Australorp hen that had a cold a few weeks ago, she would sneeze and cough. (She also wasn't vaccinated). Surprisingly it cleared up and she was completely fine after about a week.

Heart problems did cross my mind after I posted. I'm glad you mentioned that.

Do you ever feel what may be fluid in her abdomen?

I wonder if there's something that could be given to treat congestive heart failure just to see if there's improvement. I'm not one to experiment much but wondering if there's any herbal/holistic(?) things that could be tried. You'd have to pour over medical publications I'm sure to see what has been used/tried - I'd look for material relating to heart failure, ascites, etc. in Broiler Chickens - broilers are more known to have issues and they have been studied the most. Laying hens are mainly studied for reproductive cancers/disorders (hens "ovulate" so women's studies are often based on hens).

Tagging @coach723 just in case she comes on in the next few days. She may have some thoughts.

She’s very tiny under the fluff, haven’t palpated any ascites or fluid pockets. I’ve been treating all birds with garlic, oregano, turmeric and habenero sprinkles on their feed for immune boost and worm defense with this heat and moisture all summer in northern Florida. (I even considered gapeworm for her but nobody else in free range flock of 27 has had respiratory issues, and she never even left the brooder until around 5-6 weeks)
