OK so i pick up my chicks and I get them home and then I turn around (with my 2 kids in tow) and go back to town at 8 am to pick up my chick feed that I had especially ordered for me. THEY SOLD IT! To someone else, of course! So the guy was going to the other store to get another bag so my babies have to wait another 40 minutes for feed! I already paid for it so they are going to deliver it right to me. Thank goodness. I am sure that they feel bad that some highschool punk sold my feed to someone else. GRRR! Sorry I just had to vent.

Unfortunately, things like that happen.

If you are in a pinch, you can grind up some people oatmeal and give it to them. Throw in a little sand for grit.

I read that infant cereals can work in a pinch.

Now that is a good idea. I got feed for them not to long after I posted. One of the hardware store guys got a bag from their other store that is 30 min away and delivered it to my house. SOOO nice. Anyway the chicks are happy and healthy. thanks for the info though.

So glad your babies got something to eat! If this ever comes up in the future, Storey's Guide recommends a mixture of half ground-up uncooked oatmeal and half corn meal, but says not to use it very long because it's not nutritionally complete. It's better than being hungry all night, though! It doesn't mention grit but you could sprinkle a little over the top of it if you think that's necessary.
