What not to do when you go on vacation....

Taking care of my neighbor's chickens while they were gone for 10 days on vacation (6 kids in a motor home to Oklahoma and back is not my idea of a vacation but I digress!) is what got me interested in having my own little backyard flock. Now the DH has less then 2 weeks to get my coop/run done before I pick up my 6 isa browns!! They were so much fun and I never knew chickens had so much personality!!

so. chicks are 7 weeks old and we took our first vacation since i have had them.

wow. we came back and they are HUGE!

we were gone one week. it was great. i had my (kids) babysitter come and check on them every other day and my father in law check on them the other days.

they still liked me when i got home.
so all was good!!!

I have a few friends lined up for asking to house/pet sit while we are gone anywhere. Usually they stay at the house, but if they can't is not a big deal. The harder part of going away for me is making sure the sitter gets along well with the dogs. But I am fortunate in that all my sitters know about chickens and large breed dogs. PHEW - I don't know What I would do without them!!!!

Ive seen layer pellets but we have only ever bought the cracked corn and fancy scratch?? I just feed mine fancy scratch is that bad?

I am counting down the days until our vacation....(still have about a month before it actually gets here).First out of state vacation for our boys..we all are excited. We are having our helper from work to take care of our animals. I stress everyday how impt it is to feed them and what to feed them...he will be a pro before we leave. We are making sure all our feed barrels are full...LOL..

Scratch is more of a treat...not good for feeding all of the time. You should provide the layer pellets all the time and scratch just for a morning treat (like breakfast).

There are a lot of home-made auto feeders. You could try a search. Still, no mater what you do, you need someone checking every day. You never know when the waterer might leak or a chicken might get stuck somewhere!!
