I have learned my lesson...I will NOT remove the turner from the incubator if I think it has stopped. I did this the other day and have since become a mad-woman!
A few days ago, I decided that the turner in my 1588 had stopped working. Granted, I don't check the incubator very often since it is a set-and-forget model, but it seemed that every time I did check it the eggs were pointed in the same direction. I decided that it had stopped working, so I took it out of the incubator to check it. I decided that I would use the bottoms of egg cartons to set the eggs since I like the idea of them being in an upright position. a 42+ (the + being smaller eggs stacked within the other eggs) capacity turner went to a 64+ capacity incubator with using egg cartons. I put 2 18-count, 2 12-count, and a 4-count portion in there. Those filled the entire area of the incubator.
But I didn't stop there....
Since several of the eggs are 'small' (pheasant, coturnix, serama, etc), I decided I could stack these smaller eggs in among the larger duck, chicken, and turkey eggs. Obviously, I then had empty spaces needing filled, so I got some more eggs.
My little 1588 now has 95 eggs in it...I'm sure I could fit more in if needed....Of course, the turner works just fine.
Take this as a warning, if you think your incubator turner has quit, mark it while it is still IN the incubator so you don't fall prey to the 'empty space' syndrome like I did
ETA: The cabinet bator that I'm making is in the final stages.....if I can do this to a 'small' incubator I tremble to think what kind of mess I'll get in with that one! It has 4 racks for setting, each with the capacity to hold at least 48 eggs....48 eggs set in there the way they are supposed to be...I think I have proved that I'm not a 'by the book' type
