Different from what?

The only way in which I am different from my fellow geeks (colleagues and academia) is that I open my big fat mouth way too much. I don't stick my foot in it, but I tend to embarrass them with statements like, "There was a paper recently about this, I'll send you the citation, but the gist of it was similar to what you are talking about" and that tends to translate as, "Hey, your worst enemy just beat you to publication! Sucks to be you!" Or I ask questions like, "But if you do XYZ, won't that affect the results of ABC?" that translate as, "You really did NOT think this whole thing through or do any background reading whatsoever, did you?" My fellow geeks are usually smart enough to keep their mouths shut. I'm not. The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them.

Mostly, I read everything. And remember it, for the most part, or remember how to find it again. And I have a very steep learning curve, I become reasonably competent quickly. Most everyone I know has some select interests and hobbies and they pursue those with enjoyment, but I'm a generalist and I read everything, try everything twice. This has unfortunate consequences in our compartmentalized society, because I don't especially fit in anywhere. Plus, people really HATE to see a skill that took them years to master knocked out in a week or two by some smart-mouthed woman.

Other than that, I am perfectly normal.

I'm with you on Ghost Whisperer and Moonlight. Also on reading and Classic Rock. But, I love all things "horror", books movies etc. probably because I don't scare. I actually like snakes, except Water Moccasins.

I guess I'm different because of my very late start in doing what I always wanted, being a country "girl". But raising kids on my own I couldn't pass up a good paying job. I'll admit, working for an airline gave me the opportunity to see places I probably wouldn't have otherwise. Then, 7 years ago, my division was sold off to a crappy company who shall remain nameless. Although they agreed to keep the existing employees, the truth was quickly obvious. They were going to rid themselves of those who made too much and had far too much vacation time.

So, at 56 I was layed off. Bummer. But the severance was enough to pay off my house and 2 year old car. So I figured to just stay in my house, not go back to work and concentrate on my side business of making Renaissance garb (clothes).

Some years back, when my son-in-law's Father died, my Daughter and son-in-law took over his 40 acres and home. He didn't farm it or have livestock, just 40 wooded acres. They've made it into more of a homestead. Huge gardens, planted an orchard of apples, plums & pears. Added 2 fish ponds and pigs. Now they are working on fencing another pasture and adding a milkhouse for goats. It's beautiful and quiet out there. I love it.

As fate would have it, 3 weeks after I paid off my house, the property across the road from them came up for sale. It's only 5 acres, but has a pond and possibilities. They called me, very excited, as land rarely goes for sale out there, and right across the road. So, I borrowed against my house and bought it. Hopefully, some time this summer I'll get my house sold, pay off the loan, and buy a mobile to put out there. There's already a mobile on it, but it isn't habitable. I want and will have chickens. So I'll furnish the egss, my Daughter can furnish the bacon.

So, at age 59, I will finally be out in the country with gardens and chickens and who knows what else. And right across the road from my 2-year-old Grandson, and his sibling, due in November.

Sorry this is so long. Apparently I was in need of whining.
From the road into my driveway ........

What is diffrent about me is that I am very mature for a guy my age, Gardening is a spiritual experiance for me, I am a quaker, I want to be a farmer when I grow up, and I live in the suburbs with a mini farm in my famlies backyard (wish I could have goats).

SpottedCrow, I wear dead, petrified lizards in my hair, and dead bugs, I make barrettes out of them!!! I have a jar of black widow spiders and lizard tails that I find.
