I would question the correlation between the dead skunk and the other critters change in behavior.
The reason is I trap coyotes in the fall, and most of the lures I use have a strong skunk element to them. The skunk scent adds a “long call” element to the lure, which just means that the coyotes can pick it up on the drifting wind from a long way off. Those lures have skunk and other scents mixed, so it might be the combo that is bringing them in, but to me they just smell skunky.
So putting out skunk scent might bring in more critters that it will keep away.
But if you want to try it search for “skunk quill”, to get the pure stuff, but it’s pricey.
Or look for skunk scent used as “ cover scent” by some deer hunters at cabellas or some other sporting goods store,
