Summer swimming plans - ahh.  DH and I were out in the yard all day today, some of that time was spent cleaning our pool.  Supposed to be in the mid 90's some time this week.  

Question - I noticed ants in the litter pan beneath the hutch.  Does anyone know how to restrict the ants and still be able to use the droppings for fertilizer?

90's??!!?? What state are you in? We are one of the hottest states and the high today was around 60. I'm in LA.

I know some people put bug zappers or bug poison in their rabbitry's and barns. Just make sure you get it where the rabbits can't get to it!

Depends on type of ants, location to rabbits and if you go organic or not. We have fire ants. While I personally will mess with and attack a fireants mound I do not recommend it because, well I can handle an attack, some people can't. So caution around fireants!

Natural ways we use if not too bad or fireants just disturb the mound daily and they'll move a few feet over. Keep them moving till they are out.

If not many or fireants they'll do a good job of breaking up the waste.

When they annoy me bad, I clear a path to the burn pile...take a shovel and scoop out the nest quickly dumping it in a wheel barrow and running it to the burn pile. quite a site but so very effective.

Pouring boiling water into the mounds also kills and makes survivors move.

If not organic and dust it with sevin dust (safer for the animals than other ant poisons.)

We are in Phoenix, Arizona. We have been enjoying spring weather for some time. When summer comes, so do triple digits. We all do our best to stay indoors or leave town for cooler climates. Quite the opposite of the rest of the country.

Thanks again Angelicisi - I believe they are fire ants. Our exterminator calls them "piss ants". Even with the exterminator, we have the problem every year. Like you said, they just move around the yard but won't leave. I have had to jump in the pool on occasion when pulling up a dead plant and finding myself getting covered with those nasty stinging buggers. Our daughter is alergic to them and gets huge (size of softball) raised bumps if bitten. I am concerned about the rabbits getting bitten by them. The litter pan is just the usual metal sliding pan directly under the wire floor bottom of the hutch. I'm probably worrying needlessly because the rabbits free range the yard and are likely to come in contact with the ants while digging. Will have to figure out a different place for does and kits when it comes breeding/kindling time.

Another thing about fire ants is that if it rains hard the colony will float together like a floating rug. My Yorkie ran into one of those floating rugs once and came into the house screaming. I threw her into the tub to wash them off. Gave her benedryl. The vet said it could have killed her. A poster on this thread lost a rabbit litter to ants. I do eliminate the ants. They can be deadly. Also my elderly mother lives with me and I don't even want to think of her running into any of those bad mammer jammers.

I have a question for all you with big rabbits or meat rabbits!
So I know, like many people on here, that I'm always looking for ways to keep our rabbits happier and healthier. I like to give my rabbits toys when I can, and I'd love to buy the nice toys from the store but they are always destroyed really fast or not sized for rabbits 8+LBs.
I have some sources for good materials to build scaled up versions of the types of edible-safe rabbit toys you find in stores. Built with cardboard, natural glues, hay, nice plants cut from my own chemical-free property... I know a lot of folks find things on their own property to give to their rabbits for entertainment, but I was wondering if there's anyone here who would be interested in being able to buy toys like this for their own large-breed rabbits should I produce them? Just feeling out the market as it were.
I know boredom in rabbits causes a lot of behavioral issues, and not everyone has all day to spend making their rabbits nice toys, and this might be a good solution to over-priced toys that last all of 10 seconds from the pet stores. :3

I would be interested, as long as they're safe & not too expensive.
