I am inspecting the pedigrees more closely, since both my does came from the same person. They do have some rabbits in common in their ancestry, and they dams/sires for those in common both match on each pedigree. From what I understand, the pedigree on my tort looks okay, and the only obvious error I see on the black is the one I listed. I am hoping it is just an error, but I know there are many unscrupulous people breeding animals. I did have the man's number at one point, but I have changed phones and no longer have it. I'm going to get my kid's 4H leader to go over the pedigrees with me, and see if there is anything we can do to straighten it out. Bummer. We could acquire a better doe for the kid's breeding program, but we already have two rabbits that were our originals that are only pet quality, and I really don't want to end up with ten rabbits! We already have a bad case of chicken math, and the rabbits seem to be going the same route. It would be hard to part with any of our does, b/c of course my kids love them and they are pets. I don't have a problem breeding them and then selling kits as only pet quality, but I would like to keep a nice kit from our buck b/c he is beautiful and has great lines. I could always breed him out to one of the other mini-rex buns in our club and ask for pick of litter. Our tort doe actually did pretty well at the last show, our black has too much white scatter, which is why we were going to breed her with a broken. Def. a lot to think about before we actually breed, I don't want to do this irresponsibly. Thanks for the info, I love to learn more!

I'm sorry, but unless your for sure you are selling those pet buns to a forever home, I would not breed just for pets. I know it is hard to cull, but sometimes you just have to. I had to cull my Buck at the beginning of summer for having split penis. I did sell him as a pet, BUT I've known those people for a long time, and I know they wont sell it and/or give it to the humane society. Culling is one of the main responsibility tasks in caring for rabbits and it has to be done sometimes if not often. Petting out rabbits here and there is ok, but to breed just to sell pet quality, that's not reasonable. I hope I don't come out harsh, but I just wanted to get a point across.

Not harsh, I understand your point. We have buns brought to our club quite frequently to be rehomed, and they are always pet quality/poor breeding. That is why I was trying to find out more about my doe's pedigrees, and why we have been showing them to see how they do, before we would ever breed. Even before finding this fault in our black does pedigree, we were debating ever breeding her b/c of the scatter. She has an overall good shape/size and coat, but the scatter is hard to clean up with breeding (from what I understand), which is why we purchased a broken buck. We were told that would be her best option for producing some nice show able buns. But now with this pedigree issue, we will have to revisit. We aren't planning to do anything until the weather is much cooler anyways, we are kind of in info gathering right now. I would really rather breed our tort, as her color and coat is nice, she does better at shows, and her pedigree seems to be okay, but I can't find a nice red or tort to breed her with, and am not sure I want to breed her with our broken black. I appreciate all opinions, so don't worry about offending me, we are still leaning over here!

I would write down what I know to be correct. If there is something that I know to be questionable, I might put a question mark there, or just leave it blank. A partial/missing pedigree significantly decreases the value of an animal in the eyes of someone who is serious about showing, since you have to have a complete pedigree to register a rabbit, and a rabbit can't become a Grand Champion without being registered. The more information you can provide, the better.

You can't be sure about just what information isn't right, or why that is. The color clearly isn't right, but that could be someone totally making things up. or maybe they didn't remember which animal they bred to which, or maybe everything else is correct, and they just misidentified the color.:idunno

I'm in a pickle with my mini Rex's, the breeder didnt go off the color guide:( so we got blues bred to reds, and there's atleast 10-12 different colors on my pedigrees. 1doe is missing half her pedigree:( so I'm trying to fix it up a bit, with breeding to outside lines. I sell most to pet homes. A few have gone to a breeder, they now about the pedigree. But we get amazing fur/confermation/temperament. Get a lot of torts:( got our first chocolate tri( DARK CHOCOLATE) get lots of orange out of 1doe/buck pair. Haven't got a litter out of my black doe and my dads tri buck. Here soon I will thats litter is planed for next year.
