I am inspecting the pedigrees more closely, since both my does came from the same person. They do have some rabbits in common in their ancestry, and they dams/sires for those in common both match on each pedigree. From what I understand, the pedigree on my tort looks okay, and the only obvious error I see on the black is the one I listed. I am hoping it is just an error, but I know there are many unscrupulous people breeding animals. I did have the man's number at one point, but I have changed phones and no longer have it. I'm going to get my kid's 4H leader to go over the pedigrees with me, and see if there is anything we can do to straighten it out. Bummer. We could acquire a better doe for the kid's breeding program, but we already have two rabbits that were our originals that are only pet quality, and I really don't want to end up with ten rabbits! We already have a bad case of chicken math, and the rabbits seem to be going the same route. It would be hard to part with any of our does, b/c of course my kids love them and they are pets. I don't have a problem breeding them and then selling kits as only pet quality, but I would like to keep a nice kit from our buck b/c he is beautiful and has great lines. I could always breed him out to one of the other mini-rex buns in our club and ask for pick of litter. Our tort doe actually did pretty well at the last show, our black has too much white scatter, which is why we were going to breed her with a broken. Def. a lot to think about before we actually breed, I don't want to do this irresponsibly. Thanks for the info, I love to learn more!
I'm sorry, but unless your for sure you are selling those pet buns to a forever home, I would not breed just for pets. I know it is hard to cull, but sometimes you just have to. I had to cull my Buck at the beginning of summer for having split penis. I did sell him as a pet, BUT I've known those people for a long time, and I know they wont sell it and/or give it to the humane society. Culling is one of the main responsibility tasks in caring for rabbits and it has to be done sometimes if not often. Petting out rabbits here and there is ok, but to breed just to sell pet quality, that's not reasonable. I hope I don't come out harsh, but I just wanted to get a point across.
