Hello peeps!
My Black Copper Maran hen just became a mother, hatching 7 precious fluff balls. The father is an "Americana" (Ameraucana-Araucana mix from TSC/Hoovers Hatchery).
I'm hopeful I'll get dark olive eggs, but I'm not sure how many hens I'll get to lay them. 5 chicks have dark grey/blue down like their father did and 2 are black like their mom. They all have white chests like she did as a chick. I'm guessing this coloring is sex linked, which if it is it means I either have 5 hens and 2 roosters....or 2 hens and 5 roosters
I'd obviously prefer the former.
I've heard it said that pullets get their coloring from their dad, and roosters get their coloring from their mom, but I know it's more complicated than that.
Also, if anyone would like to recommend a book on chicken genetics, I'd love to learn more.
So what do we think? Am i waist deep in roos?
