What should go in my Chicken 1st Aid Kit? I'll be at the Feed Store tomorrow to stock up! I want to be prepared BEFORE anything happens!

Thanks!!

You will most likely never need anything, or only simple supplies you keep for yourself such as wound cleanser and Neosporin. You might get some BluKote or other anti-pick remedy; BluKote is also a wound antiseptic. Wormers would likely expire long before you needed one. If lice / mites appear, and you check them periodically, you should have plenty of time to get to the store. You could get some Corid in case they develop cocci, depending where you live and how wet your conditions are, but it is not cheap, and many (including me) have never had to treat for this.

You can find page long lists on here for this, but with a little luck, you will never need a thing.

This is what I have in mine:

-disposable gloves
-Neosporin w/o pain relief
-hydrogen peroxide
-betadine
-wound wash (You can easily make your own with water and kosher salt, but I like the spraying nozzle of the ready-made bottles)
-gauze, Vetrap, and other bandaging
-vaseline
-Desitin
-chux pads (I line my hospital cage with them- that way I can wrap up any mess and toss it away)
-cheap tweezers

I also keep small disposable bowls so I can use them for food and water when I need to isolate a chicken. I'm going to buy a package of terramycin or aureomycin to have on hand and keep in there as well. Some small syringes, with and without needles, would probably not be bad idea either.

Gail Damerow has a great list in Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens, but it is pretty extensive. For instance, I am never going to sew up an injury, so there's no need for me to keep any needles/thread/etc like that around. It's good you're getting a kit together- you never know when you'll need it!
