What should you get rid of?

If you have purebred birds to rehome talk to the poultry specialist at your 4H extention office. Sometimes there are kids wanting them for fair projects. In the beginning of the year I wanted to hatch Jersey Giants. Since shipped eggs are iffy, I ordered more than I needed. I called the extention office and they found kids that would take the extras once they were old enough to leave the brooder. It was a win - win situation. I didn't have to worry about having too many extras, the birds ended up in good homes, and the kids got to have a breed of chicken not very often found in this area. My only requirements were that the birds not be raised for meat, the kids needed parental permission and they had to be in a 4H poultry group.

We started out with 3 reject roosters almost 8 years ago to get ticks, then we had the pine trees cut. I have lost count on what I have, but I can tell you we sold 450 chicks this Spring and I've sold about 110 adults this summer.
