What size coop and run?

Originally we bought 5 chicks and then built a run that was 12x4. Inside the fully-enclosed run is the coop which is 4x4x4 (it sits off the ground so the chickens can roam around underneath. I was told by the local feed store that we could easily get 5 more chickens in that size coop and run, so that is what we did. Hope that helps!!

don't build just for the amount you have now because there will be a time where u will want to get more. sorry that's just the way it goes. always build bigger. i built mine big enough for 18 chickens and now I'm already planning another coop to keep up with the chicken math

Thanks. This is what I was thinking about doing. We will see how these Barred Rocks act and that will determine whether or not I add more...we live in the city and have a small backyard.

You asked about coop and run. The usualy quoted size for a run is 10 square feet per bird. Coop is as others have said at 4 square feet pre run. A lot of books say much less but the chance of aggression is greater if you skimp.

I have a very small backyard...I am thinking building a stand alone coop and build me a run with wheels on it so that I can move them around the yard in different places and then put them up in the coop for the night.

I can't agree more . I built mine thinking I only wanted 4. Well, doesn't work. I picked up 4 others. And am looking at adding 2 more. OMG. Now I have to expand. This time I'm expanding expanding expanding.
