Hi again,i have 10 chicks,(rir,barred rocks,golden sexlink) my question is what size coop/pen should i build for them? I was thinking of a coop around 4'x8'x8'tall or 4'x10'x8'tall with about a 4'x10'12' caged pen. Will this be to small?? any help greatly appricieated,thank you

A lot depends on your climate and how much time they will be spending in the coop. Generally the "accepted" size is 4sq ft per bird in the coop and 10sq ft for each chicken in the run.

So a 12x16 would be ideal for 12 birds? Am I doing the math right? It has been a while. LOL

I believe the minimum for 12 birds would be 12x4.

That's just the coop without the chicken run.

LOL I see now. Thanks. LOL

The math is simple. Just multiply # chicks by 4 (12 chick = 48 sqft) and then build a coop where length x width is than or bigger.

12 x 4 =48
16 x 3 = 48
more likely 6 x 8 = 48
7 x 7 = 49
5 x 10 =50

Same with the run

12 chicks x 10 = 120 sq ft

12 x 10 = 120
11x11 = 121
8x15 = 120

Sorry if this seems condescending but I have a history as a science/math tutor and so I could not help myself.

I wouldn't worry. I'm new to chickens too. We still don't have our coop built and our oldest chicks are 4 weeks old already. I have all 5 girls in a dog kennel.
