I understand what you mean about Michigan, I moved from there a couple years ago - now my kids want to move back!! They don't get it - but they will, I guess, once they have to pay their own way.

We moved to Kentucky, and while it is beautiful, hubby and I both retired, so we didn't move here for employment. Mostly around here there are minimum wage jobs (Min wage is less here than in MI).

Wish I could help ya out with a better answer.

Michigan will be a long time in recovering and I'm afraid we are going to lose more and more of our young people. Our governor wants to spend more money on higher education. The only thing that is going to happen is our taxes are increasing to pay for these programs and then when the students graduate they will have to move in order to find the work that will be newly qualified for.
This year they raised the cost of a builder's license astronomically. I guess if they raise fees that can say they haven't raised taxes. I only know that it is only one more thing that makes being in business in Michigan difficult.
As a father I can tell you how sad it is when your children have to move away to find employment. Two of mine now live in SW Missouri and I usually only get to see them once or twice a year. My parents moved here when I was a year old so Michigan has always been my home and I love it here but it is starting to feel like Michigan no longer loves me.

Unemployment UP in AZ. Even the mexicans are headed either south or north from hear.

Everyday I hear of new layoffs and of companies going belly up.

Don't expect the economy to start picking back up a little until the latter part of 2011 here.

My oldest son still lives and works there. His boss (my old boss) has been "small business taxed" to death. As a result, he has to cut people's hours - when will the government realize that when they hurt that "top percentage of income groups" they hurt the lower wage earners, too? If people cannot afford to keep their small business going, then what happens to the folks they employ?

My mother voted for Granholm - twice - I could just smack her sometimes. Love the woman dearly, but she really doesn't pay attention to the issues before punching that card.

I left all of my family behind in Michigan, because Hubby and I could never afford to retire there (and frankly, wouldn't want to). I like the scenery, I like the summers (not very big on the winters) but the taxes, the economy, etc... I'll take Kentucky anyday over that. I have a guest trailer for my family to come visit me - they all want to get out, too.

Our house was on the market for over a year - we finally sold for 1/3 of what it was worth, just to get rid of it.
Our taxes up there for a less than an acre lot were over $900 a year.
Our taxes down here on 25 acres was $117 last year.

Hubby's parent's house was on the market over a year, too, and it was up on Big Meyers Lake (Rockford) - not a cottage, but a 3 bedroom house. A week after it finally sold, we got out of Michigan.

Sometime ago I got an e-mail for some city in texas or maybe I googled and got it. Anyhow it gave a list of jobs that were available. Having been to Texas it looked interesting.
So maybe you should google around the country and see what's there. It's not how much you make it's whether you can be happy on what you make. If you can live on less and would be happy go for it.
Contentment is not having everything you want, it's appreciating what you have.

Housing is relatively cheap in most of Tx. My Mom lives in Ft Worth and is selling her house. 1510 sq ft, 3bdrm, 2 car garage, 2 bath, big yard very nice condition, nice neighborhood, all brick. 110k. Same house would go for 250 here in Co.
