What State would You Choose?

CA has so many beautiful places to see and the climate is fantastic. You can find property at a good price in some areas. Bad part is you can expect to pay a lot for utilities and I mean more then a car payment. We are all electric and in the summer it will run $750. This reason alone is good enough to cross the state off your list. I would move to CO my father inlaw lives there and every time we've been there the people were so nice

In the 90's they banned several guns, offering $5 for every gun turned in. We now live in Washington.

StarLover: 110 of dry heat is cool with me. :D Have you been to Kentucky at all? What do you like about it?

Chubby: It depends on what is being legislated. Some people make it sound like it is pretty loose on regulation of the individual (medical pot even, proposals for same-sex marriage, etc.) and some make it sound like it is heavily regulated, but I haven't really seen any individual examples outside of businesses being regulated (which I'm personally fine with). So, I'm hoping someone can shed some more light on the subject. Also, do you live there/have you lived there?

What about SC, my father in law moved from Northern Virginia because he like your husband does not like the cold or snow and he plays golf in the middle of winter. I do not know anything about their exotic pet ownership rules but the weather seems to be tolerable year round.

I lived in Texas, and I loved it except for in the summer it gets way to hot (110 in the shade is to hot for me) and I do know that water rights are becoming issues in the state.

Good luck with your search!

Texas is going to have huge water issues in the future, and they just had a court ruling that is going to make it worse. Texas has a "right of capture" rule for water, and says that water rights are like mineral rights. You can pump as much as you want on your own property. This means that Joe's Water Company can set up next door to you, pump your well and everyone else's dry, and there's nothing you can do.

Personally, I live in the Austin area, and if I ever get my way, and the money works; when we retire, we will have a summer home in the north. It is much too hot and too humid for me here in July, August and September.

Growing things is also tough here, with water and heat issues. Also depending where you are, soil issues.

On the flip side, Texas has low taxes, is exotic friendly, and business friendly.

If I had to move from the mtns of NC it would be to the mtns of Tenn. Absolutely beautiful land. Rolling land no excessive taxes. The upper area of eastern Tenn. gets all the seasons.
I would not like the area around memphis or the center of Tenn. They seem to get a lot of bad weather there. Storms, floods, and tornadoes. The people are friendly too. I have some friends over there. The state is well maintained too. No trash everywhere. gloria Jean

Dont think Kentucky will have any water issues. What exotic animals are you looking to own? things like ratites are good in Ky . But you cant have havalinas some smaller exotic birds that might become a nuisance, Ohio and Ky crack down now on owning large wild felines such as tigers and lions. After the suicide and release of 50ish lions, tigers pumas... in Ohio. Hey buy you may own a YAK!!!!!! also camels, toucans. BTW in Florida you need a class 3 wildlife permit for several forms of wildlife. I had one after is was told that i needed one for owning a gator snapper.

Oh my goodness, that is rent for us. We definitely could not afford that! CO is sounding more and more attractive after hearing about it not always getting snow in the southeastern area.

Chubby: $5, seriously? Politics aside...or because of...it is sounding like CA is waaay too expensive for us.

3G: Thanks! All this input is so very helpful in planning where we should visit before moving.

Mom'sFolly: Ergh, I was afraid that water rights would be the big issue, and the 'right of capture' law sounds just...ergh. Really too bad, as they seem like a hub for exotics, have land, and seem to not nose too much into other people's business.

Crazy: TN is just crazy pretty. You aren't kidding about the trash being picked up. Dollywood reminded me of European theme parks, in that they kept it clean!

Conny: Some of my long time want-to-owns are opposum (captive bred, not wild caught), ringtail Cat/cacomistle, my husband is the one who wants a sloth, we are rodent people so we both want a capybara, patagonian cavy (it cracks me up how much they look like my blue heeler!), Argentine or Columbian black and white tegu (don't think you need a permit for those though), one of the large Indian squirrel species if possible, a hyrax, grasshopper mice, and the list goes on, but those have been our top picks. One of my artist friend's recently became the first American to *successfully* import a domestic Russian fox. The importer for the first few foxes ended up being not...legal, and they ended up in a Texas sanctuary. If she reports good things on temperament and future imports, I'll be considering them. And YAKS! I love royals, but would really like a cow/yak hybrid pair for packing. We have names picked out. Soba and Ety, short for Yakkesoba and Yakety Yak. X) I think all our major bird desires do not require permits. Most of them are pigeon breeds, haha.

I noticed something after my post. DO NOT LOOK AT MY PICTURE. Yes, that is snow. In the south east part of Colorado Springs. BUT (that's a BIG but) that was was in December, a few days before Christmas (so completely acceptable), and was the most snow we've ever had the whole time we've lived here. I'm going to start giving you the weather report. Even if you watch the weather channel and see that's it's snowing here, it probably isn't actually snowing HERE. Go 10 miles north, and that's probably where it is. We had a blizzard here last week. It started early in the morning, lasted a few hours and the snow had melted by 10am. I got all excited for nothing. My first blizzard and they didn't even call a snow day.

Again, I'm here if you need anything!
