I'm getting ready to move my 7-8 week old chickens out of a room in my house and into the garage and am wondering if I need to have supplemental heat. The garage is built into a hill so stays cool and is currently 62 degrees. I plan to keep the chicks in the garage for 2-3 more weeks until they get a little bigger then begin to introduce them to my current flock. I asked the breeder I got the chicks from about it and she suggested continuing to add a little extra heat (even a low watt light bulb) to keep the temp in the mid-60's for a while longer. They are all fully feathered now and it's 70 degrees in the house where they are. I'm thinking they will be ok but would feel better hearing what others have to say. Thanks!

Hi everyone. I have mixed information now. Eight chicks, two breeds at about 5 weeks, another breed about three weeks and I have introduced them to the hens for the past week in the run. Tonight the chicks are complaining they don't want in their box any more so we are going to put them out at night in their area in the run with a little house type box that he made many years ago that our hens used. They don't want the light but they are noisy tonight just standing in the box. I turned the light back on and it does not matter if light is on or off they are noisy. We are going to try this tomorrow night. They have more room in their area in the run and they are having a good time outside.

I'm not new to hens and we've done this before but I keep reading some say not to put outside and some do with or without a light.

When it is finally time to put kids in the coop around here they get set out during the day so they can play.
About an hour before the adults go to roost I scoot the babies where they are supposed to sleep and shut them in.
That hour gives them time to peep, and fidget so by the time everyone is inside they're settled .
Nobody gets a light, just a hands on escort to bed for a week or two. :)
