How you doin'(seriously, how are you)?

Of course I am new to the byc and loving it so far.
Guess I should explain how I got here:
A while back, my neighbor got into the chicken bizz a little "putting the cart before the horse-y"--or rather, "putting the chicken before the coop-y"--and after struggling to build a coop while working and gardening and a bunch of other stuff, he decided he just couldn't spare the time to care for them.
So, I volunteered and now I have rescue chickens(For about 2 months)!

It was pretty easy falling in love and I have spent as much time as I could reading about what I can do to help these ladies and gents regain a sense of security and ease.
In that time I think I have learned that one major issue is we have three australorpes roos and only seven hens.
Im thinking that's one reason they came to me missing so many feathers and only one hen is laying. Poor girls!!
So, there is that to deal with.

Then of course, there's the illness. . .
Yep. It's pretty bad, y'all.
I got the fever. :p

I can't even begin to pick a favorite but the lavender australorps are looking pretty good(along with blue laced red dottes, blue partridge Brahmas, Welsummers, etc., etc.,).
The newer coop should be finished in a few weekends, then I will have a 12x20 pen to use for growing out and I'll need some teens to put in there.

I already bought two incubators and have plans for a brooder just in case (in case what, I am not sure, I guess I thought the easter bunny might hop by or something. Lol).

It's all very happening and I can't wait!

So, that's me. Hope to hear how you and your chicks are doing. I don't know much, so any suggestions or links are always appreciated.
Until then, you'll find me surfing the forums in search of answers.

Cheers to chickens!

Welcome to Backyard chickens, so glad you joined the flock. The Learning Center is a great first step toward your chicken education.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I'm great Thankyou and all birds are happy. I'm a happy bunny right now as I've got the incubator on and my eggs are on day 13 so I get to candle them tomorrow to see how they are progressing. That's so nice of you to take these chickens in and give them a home. Sounds like it's all very interesting for you there right now. Watch out for the incubating bug though it's hard to shake it off once you start.

As drumstick said the learning centre is a great place to start. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

so glad you have joined us and congrats on your new adventure.

I have no roos, but those with experience will warn no more than 1 per 8 or more hens. But sounds like you already know that and have plans for the issue.

Have fun, feel free to ask questions. There's so much real experience in the membership and ready to help.

Wishing you optimum weather to be able to get your coop/run completed soon.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Your intro was a fun way of starting off, a nice change from "Hi, I'm new and I have chickens" sort of intro. And I'm doing ok, thank you for asking. Been facing some challenges here lately with all the heat. I see you're in GA so you'll probably want some ideas on how to help your birds deal with it too. Chickens deal with cold better than heat and hot to a chicken is pretty much anything over 80.

A couple of things we do to keep our girls comfortable (as much as we can anyway):
* Extra waterers and as much shade as we can create with tarps
* Wet their run down a couple times in the heat of the day
* Give them cool treats like watermelon, berries, melon, cucumbers
* Wading pool for those brave enough to stand in it (this hasn't been a big hit yet, but I keep hoping)
* Fan in the coop set up to circulate but not blow directly on them

You might like chatting with other members from GA to see what their experiences are like, where to find local fertile eggs for your bator, etc. You can find them here:

Here's another link that is helpful when starting off and wanting to spoil our pets:

And when they lay a funny looking egg, don't get alarmed until you check out this:

Watch out for that 'chicken math' thing...before you know it you'll be a poultry crazed as the rest of us, lol!

It's nice to have you here, see you around!

Thanks for the warm welcome you guys! Drumstick diva, love the name and the av. ;) I'll be sure to lurk some more in TLC, that place is super informative.

Yorkshire coop, major congrats on the candling! With any luck I'll be able to say the same soon. Hope you don't mind if I stalk you a bit to see how it turns out. ;)

Sunflour, I guess two of those roos will be going up on craigslist. I couldn't bring myself to process any right now; handsome boys.

Northflchick, I was raised in Orlando and have family in live oak, so u know this isn't even hot to me. :p It's good to know that chickens are kind of heat sensitive, though, and I hadn't even considered spraying their coops down, great idea! They already get spoiled with melons pretty much every day, since I'm also a big fan. They have a wooded acre fenced to forage in, so I hope that helps out too, when this week is in the mid 90s. D:

I hope you and your chicks do well. One thing I do not miss about fl is the heat!
It's funny to hear your chickens are scared of a wading pool. haha Who'd of thought, chicken chickens!

Sounds like you guys have the run of things with your babies(badumching!). I look forward to seeing you around. Thanks again for the hearty welcome and all the tips. I can sure use them!
