Could the comb be from the hen's side?

The single comb is recessive. It would have to get a copy of the single comb gene from each parent.

I still think mom is the ISA Brown. Isa browns are a type of red sex link. Basically they are a cross between a silver hen and a red rooster. You could end up with red or white(ish) offspring from a RSL hen.

So, what about the gender? How old does the chicken have to be to crow? It is 19wks for hens to start laying eggs, but what about the crowing?

they can start at three months or even six months, depending on the rooster. He should be crowing any morning now!
