what time is bed time?

For my girls sunset means just as the sun literally disappears beyond the mountains. It's still light out but there is no direct sunlight anymore. That is generally about 15 minutes before it gets dark outside.

I don't know if that helps ... just watch your chickens and they will pick their own sunset time and generally stick to it every night.

Ours are almost 8 weeks old, and they put themselves to bed right at sunset. We just go out and close the coop door.

Of course, they went to the outside tractor at 3 weeks old. For about a week we had to go out every night and lift each one--all 32 of them--up into the coop part of the tractor so that they could get under the light at night. They kept trying to sleep in a pile on the grass under the coop part.

But now that they're big girls, they go to bed on their own, except for one kinda ugly easter egger named Turkey Bird that wants to sleep on top of the chicken tractor and has to be put into the coop part kicking and yelling every night.

eta: Turkey Bird does the kicking and yelling. I just try to put him into the coop.
