What to do about a muddy chicken pen???

My poor girls have a muddy chicken pen! It has been raining like crazy here, and my pen looks like a mud wrestling pit! I feel bad for my girls because they look so miserable walking around in the mud. I raked some leaves and put them in the pen but the rain is just getting them wet and the girls are walking on them and it is still muddy. We have a large tarp over some of the pen, but with all the rain nothing will stay dry.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I put bark /wood chipping in mine, gives good drainage, and gives them stuff to peck about in

I plan on using a few inches of sand.

Put out old boards you can probably get free scraps at a lumber yard.
