Well, my husband and I worked on him about an hour. Bless his heart, my husband diligently picked off over 100 maggots, but when he discovered yet another area just crawling with those nasty creatures, on his lower back and thighs that we made the decision to put poor Verne out of his suffering. We just couldn't see how he could possibly survive with so many wounds. We've come to the conclusion that Verne must have been injured by our big rooster (he's very aggressive) and that's what opened the door to the maggots. And then Verne kept picking at the infected area creating more open wounds for them to feed upon. It was amazing to me how quickly the maggots worked. It was a very disgusting experience!! I've certainly learned to be more vigilant about checking over our chickens in order to protect them from pests. We've dusted all the chicks that were housed with Verne (I they all had lice on them, some more than others) with the Sevin and will do it again in 2 weeks. I cleaned out the coop and put in new bedding with DE and a sprinkling of Sevin. Hopefully I'll be able to rid them from the lice infestation and then keep them healthy and relatively pest free in the future.
So sorry for your loss. & don't be discouraged, sometimes these things happen no matter how good of a chicken mom you are! I have learned a lot over the past few years from experience, as with most BYC'ers.
