Well, we just took Cheddar down to the big coop, and it did NOT go well! My ducks were well behaved (of course), but my Naked Neck, my CCL, and my Leghorn were all trying to get her through the fence! Oh my goodness! And hubby was there to see that. I might just pick up a new duck tomorrow...
Well that is one way to get another call duck 😆

Ducks and chickens and turkeys and etc. are not pets! They belong in the country, on a farm. That seems to be the consensus amongst the general population. They see people with rescue chickens in their houses and are repulsed. And it's a shame... They are missing out on a wonderful animal that is personable and loving, as much as any dog or cat.

I love my cats, and my dog (big idiot that he is), but I also love my outdoor critters. My two roosters come running to me when I go outside, and follow me everywhere. So do the ducks, especially the half-grown ducklings who love to be scritched and pet.

And recently, I took in one of my daughter's bantam cochin chicks after she (the chicken) suffered from heat stroke and have nursed her back to health, and am seriously considering just keeping her inside with me, lol! Such a sweet little thing. She makes soft trilling noises when I hold her and we snuggle and watch videos together. :)
I know exactly what you mean. Ideally, it'd be great if ducks and ch9ckens lived on big, grassy farms with ponds and fruit trees and gardens with no fences or predators. But most live short, miserable lives in commercial facilities. Though not perfect or ideal, the houses of crazy people like us is far, far more humane.

I hope everyone realizes that the first two sentences were not my own opinion.

I should also say that if you get another duck, we are going to need to see pictures.
Naturally.

Ok, hypothetically speaking, if I were to get a new duck to be a companion for Chedz, are there any tricks to introducing a single duck to a single duck? Just hypothetically.

Honestly, I think that would solve a lot of issues if I could find another duckie she can bond with.

(edited because I am an actual expert in linguistics, and my grammar in this post was embarrassing)

Individual ducks tend to integrate well together, but there is no guarantees. They are usually desperate for companionship from another duck.

And hubby wants to keep Chedda in the front yard with the 2 special needs chickens she was raised with.
The only potential problem I could see with this, is if cheddar gets hormonal and wants to mate the chickens. It could cause accidental injures in the chickens. You know how female ducks get without a drake. Some are worse than others. But it may not be an issue at all.

This was today (not verbatim, but you get the idea):

Hubby: "I didn't realize just how small Chedda is until we put her out there with the big ducks. They're like 5x her size."

Me: "Yup."

Hubby: "I think she was scared with all those big animals looking at her."

Me: "I'm sure she was terrified."

Hubby: "I don't think it's going to work to put her with the big ducks."

Me: "Nope. Me neither."

Hubby: "Maybe we should get another Call duck. You know, so she will have someone her same size."

Me (doing mental cartwheels and fist pumps): "That's not a bad idea. Are you thinking we'd keep them in the front yard with the Polish?"

Hubby: "Yeah. I really don't see how else we can make it work."

Me: "I think you just solved the Cheddar problem!"
