What to do? Hubby doesn't want all 5!

Oh you have to get her a pair of welsummers. I got mine about 2 months ago. Now these girls are about 3 months old.
They are so sweeeeet to each other. They make these little noises to each other - - -
I have never had a pair of chickens that bonded to each other so much or talk to each other so much.

I have a roo that is a couple months older than the welsummers and the girls nest at night right under his wings.
Talk about spoiled little Daddy's girls these welsummers are it ! !

They show are the signs of being very mellow and loving hens. I Can't wait for them to get a little older.

The red sexlink hens I have laid eggs throughout the bitter winter cold,so they are worth having!
I don't think there is much cost difference with 2 more.Maybe there is a need to clean bedding more.I don't know.I had 6 sold 3,and now raising another 6 my dd's school gave me-so up to 9.More poop but more eggs too.

My dh did get annoyed when he would come home and find I had gotten another *free* pet off craigs.Eventually I sold some pets and promised to not get anymore...unless a current pet died! Got do what you can to keep the peace, but at the same time work it so you get what you want too.Since animals require money for care I guess you should get your spouse to agree.

In nature, some weak chicks will die - - failure to thrive. Now add to those low numbers of deaths - - - chicks have to survive some rough times during shipping - - - then they arrive at some feed stores who do not take good care of them - - - some of those feed stores allow anybody to pick them up and handle them roughly AND the result can be some chicks who die within the first week of arriving at your home.

I have only lost 2 chicks out of the 30 - 40 chicks that I have bought.
I try to buy chicks that are a little older than a day or two. I like to get mine when they are 1 - 2 weeks old - - - - it helps assure that they will make it.

If your chicks dies

, you will have to let Dh know that you are going to replace it - - - just incase others die.

My Dh would be much more likely to leave me over bringing home a child than 2 chicks,

I think Dh supports my chicken hobby because it is harmless and keeps me at home and is relatively inexpensive.
I could be partying, bar hopping, shopping (OMG - don't let me near the mall), hanging with girlfriends and excluding him, etc.
Instead, I am in the backyard taking care of my feathered girls and collecting eggs for his Massive weekend Breakfasts.
Once Dh gets a taste of farm fresh eggs - - - there will be no going back to store bought egggs.

Unfortunately chicks do die. If you feed them right, keep them in fresh clean water, you'll likely have them for some time. Mortality usually occurs at certain times in their life. It is just like raising children, you have to prevent or deal with childhood diseases, then the consequences of rambunctious teenagers, each stage has its own perils.

Okay got to give my "4.99" sence worth.

Tell your DH that because of his music intrest you have to raise more money so you have 5 chicks so you will have more eggs to sell. And if his intrest continues to go so will your need for more chicks to keep up with the money demand.....Hows that for an angle?

Me too!! My husband does NOT care for animals at all he would be happy not having any but when we met I laid it out there for him and he still chose to marry me,he never knows what he will find when he comes home....I understand he is not a fan of the animals so we compromise.....I don't allow the animals in our bed(cats dont count) I dont ask him to take care of any of the animals(but he does if he sees they need something or I need help) and in exchange he doesn't tell me what I can and can not have.....he has learned I wont listen anyway and he is tired of me reminding him of when we met and what I told him then.
