What to do - pip but not zipping

Is it safe to say it is dead? I’m afraid to throw it away just in case

I can only see the second photo and I am not familiar enough to know if this chick is malpositioned or not.

Yes, I agree it doesn't look alive.

I am wondering though if it died because it was malpo.
@WVduckchick is this chick in a wrong position?

The pip was at the bottom. Maybe I should have turned it? Trying to figure out what I did wrong because this was the first of 8 eggs in the incubator and don't want to make the same mistake.

Well I don't even know yet if it is in a bad position.
I'm waiting for someone who can look at it and tell for sure.


There are many things that can cause a malpo, I believe, but I am not so sure that you did something to cause this.
Sometimes it just happens.

Thanks for the help, this is my first time incubating so just trying to check all the boxes for things I need to know and do, etc. I first noticed the pip at the bottom last night at bedtime. It had zipped a bit by the morning but then I went to work and I'm not sure at what time it stopped zipping.

The head/beak should be under the wing, it looks like it’s behind it, can’t tell how it may have been before the cap was removed, but the wing may have gotten in the way of the zip.

Agree with the RubyNala, once they start a full zip, an hour total is about my maximum. They may stop for a few minutes between turns, but once they start, they should continue. Some breeds tend to be worse about starting and stopping than others.

Another thing along that line is skipping sections of shell while zipping. They shouldn’t miss spots, it should be a nice clean zip. But if random spaces get missed, they could have trouble once they get around. I usually pull the cap off those too, then let the chick finish pushing out.
