Please help! I have a rooster, 5 5 Black Sex Link hens, 2 guinea fowl and the cutest little Cochin hen. My problem is the rooster won't leave the little cochin alone. As soon as I let them all out of the chicken run in the morning he goes after her, biting her in the neck and throwing her around and then she ends up retreating and hiding under the barn until sunset. Because I am really new at this I am not sure this is normal behavior for roos or do I need to get rid of him. He doesn't bother the other hens except occasionally mating, but nothing like what he does to the little hen. I really love to hear him crow and strut in the yard as he watches over all the other hens but am willing to get rid of him if this is not normal behavior.

Thanks for any input given...

Hi there! You probably don't want a standard size rooster with a bantam hen - - and if your roo is not treating the hens with the utmost respect, he doesn't need to be there at all! No roo needs to be nasty to the hens. Sounds like he thinks that bantam girl does not belong in the flock.

There are plenty of nice roos out there if you feel you need a roo.

Hope things work out with your poor little hen! Please keep us posted.

What should you do with your mean ol' roo?
Should you put him in a pan or put him in a stew?
You could scold and tell him no
Or chase him down in the snow
All this you can do, with your mean ol' roo.
