So my friend and I are comming upon the question of what to do with the birds that no longer lay. We are looking into aquiring more, younger birds, but we don't know what to do with the older ones. We really don't want to slaughter them. We have a limited amount of space because we are in the city? Any suggestions? What do you guys do?

Well for me they are live stock and apparently what I would do, would be difficult for you, or so you say. You can sell them super cheap or give them away to someone that only wants a pet that can eat table scraps and fertilize the yard, but they might not want very many. I imagine they would make an interesting pet, provided they have a protected area and a lot of cover.
Depending on the breed, they might make decent broodies, even though they might not lay many eggs. So they might actually be valueable to a small farm.
