What To Do With Roos

I got my 6 chicks from Rural King in March... 3 RIRs and 3 BRs. I can't remember exactly but the receipt says I purchased 3 "chicks straight run" and 3 "egg layer pullet (sex link)" and now it appears I have a couple of roos that I did not want. I was positive the BRs were the pullets but they are what I suspect to be 1 pullet and 2 roos. I just wanted egg layers.

Well, I'm guessing that my only options are to butcher the 2 roos or possibly trade for pullets. (I don't even know if anyone even does trades like that) I've never butchered a chicken and not sure I could do it since it isn't necessary to sustain life at this point. A trade would be better but how would I go about that?

Unfortunatley, even with "sexed pullets" - there is a 5-10% chance of a mis-sexed bird. First step - post some pictures of your birds in the "what breed/gender" section and let folks take a crack at helping you confirm or correct your gender thoughts. From there, what you do with any roos is up to you - CL, freezer camp, local swap, etc.

Not many people want to trade a productive hen for useless roosters. Try craigs list.
I hatch out about 40 useless roosters a year and I can't give them away so I eat them.

BTW, there is a FB group for the Indiana BYCers - you can try posting your birds there too if you do find you have roos that need re-homing. Are you opposed to someone else butchering them? If you are okay w/them being eaten but just not up to doing it yourself it'll be easier to place them.

UPDATE: I found some Amish people near Rushville that butcher chickens for $2.50 each. Those roos were delicious but the meat was a bit tough.
