I saw my dog playing with my little black cat and then felt my little black cat rubbing my leg. Yep Pepe LePew. Vet said use Dawn dishwashing liquid as fast as possible as skunk spray is oil based. It worked pretty well and she only smelled vaguely skunky for a few days. Moral to the story, buy Dawn when you get the trap. Oh and don't play with black cats.

I keep a bottle of Dawn on hand anyway. Used as a dog and/or cat shampoo, it kills fleas. I use it even when I don't see any, simply because I have three animals that are allergic.

A skunk needs to be able to raise its tail to spray - it shouldn't be able to raise its tail in a live trap... If it isn't in a trap, DH kills with a head shot and then buries it right away. A skunk can spray more than once, I saw one spray my sisters dog twice. The second spray was definitely not as strong of a spray, but it did spray. Funny how when it isn't your dog it is cool to see the yellow mist spray the white dog.

My husky got sprayed one time, it soaked her right down to the skin. She had taken off and didn't come home for 2 days. I scrubbed her down 3 times and she still smelled skunky every time her fluffy under-coat got wet, until she shed it out 3 months later.

Why don't you call an exterminator and play dumb? Say you don't know what you saw but point him to Mr.Skunks location and have him set his traps. He HAS to come back and get it!

There are other methods to dispatch skunks, but they wont be any more comfortable for you than just a clean head shot.

1) Drop the entire cage into a full barrel of water and come back in ten minutes.

2) Get a large plastic tub with a locking lid. Cut a hole in the side that will allow you to run a hose from the tail pipe of your car to the tub. Only takes about 60 seconds of exhaust to put an animal of that size down and I hear it's pretty peaceful. Good luck.

Yup - but it'll cost and you'll still have to deal with the smell around your coop!

I think there will be a variety of people with a variety of levels of what they consider as "humane." While we all know that just because the government says something, doesn't mean it is correct, it DOES mean that there are real world punishments involved. I'm not sure that I'd want to drown an animal myself, but in the face of deciding how to encapsulate a potential spray, water seems like a decent method.
