What to do with trapped squirrels

that's a tough one, we had a bunch in our house when I was renting back in school. I called the city with the same question. they calmly said to take a five gallon bucket of water and dump the trap into it until the squirrel stopped moving and then discard it in the trash, I was kind of horrified. I asked about relocating and they flatly said it was illegal, that it causes displacement of other squirrels and generally did more harm than good. I can say with confidence now, that no amount of coercing or scaring the them will deter them from finding food if it's available.
