Today i had to throw out the straw-bedding from the duck-house and in the middle of my work it hit me: Why not use the used bedding to fight the slippery mud?
-> My property is located on a hill-site and covered with red loam. There is bad drainage so during the current wet season the part between the house and the duck-platform became really muddy and slippery.
Well the duckies came running and protested loudly when they saw me throwing their bed into the mud. :D But when they saw their new bed… they got really excited and they love it
Now everybody is happy, i won't slip and fall into the mud and the ducks have fresh straw. Maybe the mud is a little unhappy, but i don't care about that! ;)

I compost mine, just throw it into a pile and let it build up. The next year it goes into my gardens! Rabbit bedding too, and all the kitchen scraps.
I threw it on the compost pile too, but today i found out that straw is really good against slippery mud. Hopefully it will decompose quickly in spring and fertilize the grass.

I recently figured out the same thing and do this also but after I've covered up all the mud I start a "pile" of poopy hay and toss it everyday for them. They love poking in it and searching for treasures especially now that the grass is no longer growing.
