Somewhere I saw an ad for “the best tasting eggs, guaranteed!” I only saw the ad once, I think while visiting my parents, so it may be a local farm. I’m curious what they feed to get eggs so tasty they can guarantee them. Any ideas?

Chicken Feed ?

I don't know how true this is but it was told to me by an old timer who has raised chickens for more than 60 years. We were talking about egg quality and he mentioned that the best quality eggs would have golden colored yolks not yellow. When I asked him what makes the golden color he said "wheat".He said you can always tell if a chicken was fed wheat by the color of the yolk.(believe it or not)
That's why I'm surprized when I hear that feeding scratch should only be done in real small amounts and I hear very little of people feeding wheat. Anybody ever heard something like this??? Will

We feed our hens Blue Seal layer pellets, apple cores, mixed veggies and yogurt. The eggs are really good. I don't even add milk to my omelets anymore. Experiment. It's fun.

I second the chicken feed and weed/kitchen scraps. No onions or greasy food (and none for you either!), but fresh veggies and newly pulled up dandelions, grasses, etc. I don't feed anything special and have rich golden yolks and yummy eggs!

We feed our chickens (as scraps) strawberries and apples. Our eggs taste fantastic and friends/family/co-workers who take or buy our eggs say they are the best they have ever had. I agree not to feed them greasy food or onions. Onions is a huge mistake. We also let our chickens roam around our yard and that helps with tasty eggs too.

Best of luck!! Good question!

Us, either.

We feed layers' crumbles, a handful of scratch here and there, and the girls free range. They do get table scraps, veggie scraps, and occasionally attack the dog's bowl.

Our local grocer sells organic steel cut oats, and those are mixed with yogurt as a bi-weekly treat.

We've actually got another person where my husband works who sells eggs, same price, brown eggs. We're making her lose business, people say our eggs are better. She doesn't treat her girls, and they are kept in a too small enclosure. I believe she feeds just pellets and cracked corn.

I think if you just keep your girls eating healthy things and avoid the naturally "stinky" or "strong" foods, they'll taste good no matter what.

and really, worrying about what they eat in the yard is a waste. My girls destroyed a nest of baby toads, ate them all up, and we've noticed no taste change in the eggs. I was worried, too.

Good luck-

Our chickens range, get pellets and get healthy scraps. We also buy scratch which we feed even in the summer as a treat only. I heard it's to fattening for summer, but since our chickens are always running they do well on it. Their egg yolks are rich and orange-yummy!
