What to name them...............

Our family has lots of fun naming our chickens. We keep changing the names- they don't seem to mind. Here are some of our names:

Juliet- a leghorn that always jumps up on my shoulder and stares at me (thinks I'm Romeo).

Oprah- a black sex-link, at the top of the pecking order, that always has something to say.

Charles Chickens- Barred Rock rooster, our son had to read Charles Dickens for English class. Somehow the rooster got names Charles Dickens, then Charles Chickens, then just Charles.

Olive- a shiny black sex-link, feathers look oily in the sunlight. At first she was called Oil, then Olive Oil, then just Olive.

I like flower names: Petunia, Rose (or Rosie), Violet, Iris, Daffodil, Daisy, Clover, Pansy, Marigold, Zinnia, Crysanthimum, etc. There's plenty for eleven girls! As for the boy, how about Gregory Peck?

Nobody has mentioned the obvious - shouldn't one be named HENrietta? Or is that TOO obvious?

And I lean towards old fashioned names too. Chickens just look old fashioned, and lady like - in a frumpy sort of way. Adeleide, Bernice, Mathilda.

I don't have any chickens yet, but have plans for next year.

Themes of chicken names from my childhood:

Salt, Pepper, Cinnamon, Chocolate (spices)
Christmas, Snow (seasonal things that match their colors)
Stripey, Pinwheel (descriptives)
Puffin, Clock (random)

Happy naming!

My red Frizzle (that is not frizzled) is Ruby
My DH named our Millefleur (golden with pretty tiny spots of black and white) Sparkle
My white show silkie is Fancie

Sparkle always responds to her name, the first time he said it she came up close to him and crooned.

Fancie is dignified and will stand and fluff her feathers. I always think of her in pearls.

Ruby loves her name and thinks it is a complement for me to pet her and call her by her name.

As a kid, my mom and I had a small flock of leghorns that were named for the old ladies in the neighborhood. The big rooster was Inspector, which was his job for all our projects.

A neighbor fancier gave me a Silkie rooster that was my special pet and would ride around on my shoulder like a parrot. I gave him the name of Shang-high because the first time I saw him he shangied my heart.
