What to put in a garden for chicken

If you’re looking for something to harvest and store for winter eating, corn, pumpkin, and butternut squash are great.

I plant a lot of comfrey, as it grows fast and can be cut down for grazed several times a season.

I plant marigolds just outside of my run fence. My birds can get at the greens that grow through the hardware cloth without disturbing the roots or half of each plant. I deadhead the flowers frequently, dropping some of the heads into the soil to reseed and some into the coop. At the end of the season, or anytime the plants get top heavy (which happens pretty often with the biddies eating the back half off of every plant,) I cut the plant back hard and toss the greens to the chickens. They get a good snack and I get a little bit of "pretty" to look at from the house. Everybody wins!
