what to put on my coops dirts floor?

I didn't realize how muddy and nasty the coop would get when we built it two years ago. The cleaning is a real hassle. I have been using hay. Is there something. better? would it be better to lay wood boards down to hose off? Sand?

A few inches thick of sand and them pine shavings. Mine is fairly easy to clean that way.
