What type of dog is best?

Maybe I will go to a shelter and pick a puppy there. I'm not sure we can buy a dog I looked up the prices and dang 1,500 for a collie. But I still need to ask my parents about it I'll post if we do get one!

Dogs used in hunting (such as Labradors, Pointers, Beagles) that have been bred to retrieve or point/flush out prey (but not make the kill themselves) generally make good pet dogs who can live very harmoniously with other animals. Our Lab x Pointer is great with the other animals (despite her exciteability) and knows that birds are off limits. She wouldn't even think of sniffing our hand reared cockatiels or finches when they are out if they landed near her. But it took a lot of training and consistency to get her there and puppies/young dogs are not mature enough to be left unattended with birds. Training is the key to a well behaved dog that's a pleasure to be around. :fl Hopefully your parents will think it's a great idea and a way that you can demonstrate how responsible you are.

I really want a dog because all my friends live pretty far away now and I don't have much to do after school. I'm home schooled so I can hang out with him or her a lot. I love going outside and I love my cats, chickens, and duck a LOT but it's hard to play with them. The cats and sometimes the chickens will play with a string but that gets kind of dull after about 5 minutes. I also love going on walks which is why I want a big dog. I'm not allowed to go walking on my own but if I had like a German Shepard I would be able to go whenever I wanted. I do have a brother but he's very introverted and doesn't come outside and my parents are very busy most of the time so it's usually just me out side. So I just want one that will hang out with me and play and go on long walks. Will a German Shepard be good with that along with chickens? There are a lot of them in shelters around our area that need homes.

It all depends on the dog. I've read of a couple of German Shepherds on here that are as good as gold while their owners are around but if their owner's back is turn or they are left unattended they will grab a bird.

That sounds awesome! I was homeschooled up until this year and my shelter pup was my best bud. Another good advantage of a shelter dog is that you will be home more so you can watch him/her and see his/hers personalty come out!!:love
