I have ducks and chickens and it is almost time to process them.

What kind of knife do I need? Looks like the ducks have a lot of feathers and is hard to pass through the features..
I have seen people butcher with a scalpel, but that must be hard to use to cut a duck's head off!

Looking at a hunting supply shop near me, would this do the job?

I have really no idea!

EDIT: Oh, would it be more like a fisherman's knife, like this:

Any sharp knife will do I'd figure if you use it correctly. I've butchered birds out with a paring knife (albeit a sharp paring knife, we use Coldsteel products.)

I've also butchered out numerous chickens, coons, etc.. Using nothing but poultry shears.

Thanks! I tried with my paring knife but it didn't even go through the thick duck feathers. I guess it needs some sharpening or I don't know how to use it properly. That is much possible.

Outdoor edge knives are supposed to be pretty good, they sell whole kits for a little more than the Gerber. http://www.outdooredge.com/game-processing-butcher-kits-s/20.htm

Coldsteel also makes knives just for butchering. http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/36G/MASTER_HUNTER_PLUS.aspx (Cheaper link here: http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Master-Guthook-Concealex/dp/B000EUD3NM )

Then poultry shears should work- if you can't get to the skin through the feathers you can always trim them away with the scissors.

The Gerber would also work though, Gerber's a pretty good company and like I said.. If it's sharp, it should work. I have had some knifes that couldn't hardly cut through chicken skin, let alone duck feathers.

Thanks all!

I was going to buy a Rapala, I like how they fit in my hand and I also wanted one for my fishing trips.
When I got to the store, I met a duck hunter. He showed me a bird game knife. I liked it, so that's what I bought ;) Extremely sharp, nice handle.. didn't try it yet.. hehe

I use a Havalon Piranta Skinning knife for everything except cutting through joints. It has a replaceable blade, so I just replace blades when it starts to get dull, rather than sharpening. I love it, it works great, perfect size for me.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BGDI2XC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For cutting off feet, heads, necks, and wing tips, I use a study kitchen knife.
This is what I have been using. I even use it on the joints. The feet are easy to do without having to cut through bones, and when cutting through the neck I just break it and then use the knife on all the soft parts. The only bones I ever cut are the ribs on the rabbits I process.

Don't worry so much about what knife to use - invest in a knife sharpener.

Any knife that fits comfortably in your hand and can be sharpened is the best one. Your favorite (non-serrated) kitchen knife is the one to use, just get a good edge on it and sharpen it periodically throughout the day. You're already used to it and it will be one less thing for you to figure out on what can be a stressful day.
