What type of red heat bulb?

As another seasoned chicken person has said so many times on this site "They don't need heat they are chicken. What happens if the electricity goes off and they are use to heat " I hope I quoted her right. She is in Alaska !
It was 9 degrees with wind chill this morning and my girls were fine in a uninsulated but draft free coup.

There is so much dust generated in the coops that a fire is possible !

Well that is good to know.

Hey, anyone want to buy an infrared heat light?!

On second thought, I may hang it in my bathroom to point on me while I'm drying. Are you kidding me those things are in hotels? I have never been in a hotel that fancy.

They are both dangerous as is driving to work. I understand red bulbs are a fire hazard but I'd like to know how many are used compared to how many have created a fire. I'd venture to say that it would be a diluted number. IMO. I apologize for going strong as I have a thing against christmas lights as they kill people and red bulbs kill so many animals.

Anyway, these are safe as christmas lights if used properly. I do not condemn the use of christmas lights as the amount used does out number the amount that have created a fire. Just as I use red bulbs as I believe are safe enough as the risk is low enough.

I am so on the fence with the heat, and I think I will go ahead an not use the heat lamp! I will feel better about it.

So many people here assure they are fine in the cold, and are in colder climates than I am.
I'm just afraid my coop isn't as well built! I think it is...but I always second guess myself!

I will invest in a heated water bowl though, the frozen water everyday is no fun!

Thanks all!

Hi guys.. sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have a related question. Which is, I'm interested in warming the coop (it got down to 25 F last night) not because I'm worried that my hens will freeze to death, but because I've read it will help increase egg production. After reading about the danger, I've removed the heat lamp from inside the coop. Increased egg production is not worth dead chickens. But what would be a good alternative to a heat lamp in warming the coop?

THanks

www.shopthecoop.com Click on coop heaters. Scroll down to flat panel coop heaters.

I have talked with some people that use these.

It has been 9 degrees the last few nights here. My coop is not insulated but is draft free. I don't heat and IM getting 9 eggs from 11 girls almost everyday. I do extend there daylight by having a 40 watt bulb (white) come on with a timer about 4 AM which gives them the added daylight they need to lay.

It works for me !

What a funny coincidence you posted that, chicken women. I was just thinking about this thread last night and thought:

"Hey, you know those little flat night-lights that just have a blue panel on them... someone ought to make chicken coop heaters like that."

And there they are!

Thanks for the link.
