Hi guys,
I'm a newbie to the BackYard Chicken site, but have had chickens for 3 years now. I am building a new chicken run and need to know what is the best roof to use in my area, Pensacola, FL. I have read so many different things about plastic corragated roofs compared to metal roofs and have no clue what to choose. It gets pretty hot here so I'm worried about the plastic, but if this is the same roofing used for greenhouses, it's got to be ok right? Also, where is the most affordable place to get either this metal or plastic roofing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

They need shade and lots of it in warm months, so I wouldn't use plastic, myself, as it lets some light through. Also, they vary in how long it takes sunlight to break it down. I'm a 100% metal roof person, myself, as it's maintenance free and lasts forever.

I agree with Judy, metal roofs last longer, though they can get hot. One way to work around this is by painting the sheets white. It really helps! Adequate shade for the hens is vital if you live in a hot climate and if you could provide muddy puddles for them to cool their feet in even better. I started doing this for my hens when we lived in South Africa and they loved it.
