I haven't had a garter snake eat any of my eggs. My chickens will quickly eat a smaller sized garter snake. If they ganged up on him, they would've eaten him. There is a good chance he was too scared and he won't be returning.

Western garter snakes have the stripe down the back and then a stripe on each side. You might be right. I’m from Iowa and I don’t remember them looking like that. Shouldn’t it have strips Down it’s sides too?
Normally garter snakes aren’t big enough to eat eggs. Mose eat insects and mice. But I’ve found that after hitting 65 my memory isn’t what it use to be. LolThis one looks a lot like him!

do you think he will come back??? Will they try to eat the eggs my chickens haven’t started laying yet? Could they have eaten him?
I’ve never seen one that looked this way either, or this big! But I’m thankful for the community to get me answers and ease my mind!Normally garter snakes aren’t big enough to eat eggs. Mose eat insects and mice. But I’ve found that after hitting 65 my memory isn’t what it use to be. Lol
garter snake. feed it to the chickens! they usually love snakes!Hi all.
When I do my chicken chores each day I let the chickens out of their coop to roam free for a bit.
I saw a few gathered around the back of the run then leaping back in fear, then gathering around again. They had found a snake!
It honestly is bigger than any garter snake I have seen in my life. It had a red tongue. I had read posts on here saying chickens “slurp up snakes like spaghetti” but it just seemed much too big for them to take on.
I put them back in the coop and the snake was gone when I went too look for it again.
Is this just a garter snake? And should I have let the chickens dispatch it, or could they have gotten hurt?
Sorry that the pictures are terrible. I was not interested in getting any closer than needed.

I also think it is an Eastern Garter Snake. I have a female that lives in my stone wall every year, and she is really big. I have seen my ducks eat small Garter and Red Bellied snakes but they don't take her on.

don't know, i had a garter snake as a pet for 2yrs and gave it eggs as a treat every so often. but the chickens will probably peck it apart if one ever showed up.I’ve never seen one that looked this way either, or this big! But I’m thankful for the community to get me answers and ease my mind!
