I was out watching the chickens and trowing some treats in the pen when my roo grabbed a hen by the back of the neck and was shaking her???? I have never even seen chicken before I bought them so dont know what to expect. Was he trying to hurt her???

Sounds like he could have been mating? Sort of strange. Hopefully someone with more experience may know. However, I would keep an eye on the situation to make sure your hen is okay. There is a post here of a rooster that tried to kill a hen by trying to tear her head off!

I dont think she is old enough to lay eggs so would he still try to mate with her? She doe look to be the largest/oldest of all of them.

I am not sure about whether her age would matter. Why dont you look up mating behavior on the site here and it may give you a better idea of what happens and at what age.
