first thing I thought of was a coot also because they dive a lot. Since I love to birdwatch, I actually know more about wild ducks than domestic ones! it looked a lot like the scooter, but solid black and its bill was solid, kind of gray/orange pale colored.

I think I've seen what you're talking about Bleenie. I've seen big crowds of these little black duck like creatures at my neighborhood lake among the Canadian geese and the other ducks. They're completely black and have very little feet and small bills. In fact, they don't look very much like ducks at all, but they hang out with the ducks and swim too. I've been wondering what they are...

Edit: Never mind, I took a closer look at the black coots someone suggested and I think that's the bird I've been seeing. Silly me!
