That's funny, I thought Ropen was a typo, but googled it.

I certainly hope that wasn't in my backyard.

The Cucui or Cucuy is a hispanic culture 'boogeyman'. Parents used to tell children to stay in bed at night or the Cucui would come and take them away. It kept children from roaming around at night, going outside where they might get hurt or lost. I don't think I remember that it flew, though....
 
A heron's neck looks like an S when it is in flight. They go to my neighbor's ponds occasionally, and frightened my birds by perching for a flight break atop my italian cypress trees. They are HUGE. Hawks and owls are much smaller. For that matter, so are eagles (talking great blue heron--some of the other herons are pretty small).
