What was your hatch rate on your very first try?

My first hatch I had 19 out of 24 hatch, same thing with 2nd hatch ,eggs from friends that had well established flocks. My grandson who is 9 did most of the work we used a hovabator with a fan set up.

My first hatch was early this month...I set 8 Serama eggs and 2 quail eggs that I got from a fellow BYC member at the Ohio National. Of those, both quail hatched and are doing great...5 serama hatched but one needed some help and ended up passing after 4 days or so. I guess 6 total out of 10, so 60% in a LG still air...not bad I guess.

My 1st hatch was a duck egg in a cardboard box about 10 years ago! I got a beautiful duckling that my DD named Ty.

Presently, my DH built me a incubator out of an old cooler. My DD is a HVAC tech and he always has stuff laying around. He replaced the water heater thermostat ( he really doesn't like them) with a digital one he had in his garage. It is dead on the temp. I put 14 eggs at 2 a.m. this morning. I have 14 eggs---11 EE mixes, a mystery light brown egg ( I have LF Buff Brahmas and GLWdon't know who's laying them) and 2 BCB from hens that just started laying last week.

Give me 21 days and I'll report back!!!

Our first hatch we had 100%. We made a homemade bator to see if our idea would work. We used our own mutt eggs from our own flock. About 7 days into the experiment, we ran out and bought a bator because the temp and humidity were too hard to control. I think the hatch rate would have been alot lower if we used the homemade bator for the entire duration if the process.

On our first hatch, we hatched 4 out of 5 chicks, and the fourth one was fully developed but died in it's shell.

I think it helped that we had a store bought incubator, because for our second hatch we weren't so lucky.

We built a homemade incubator (the other one we borrowed from a friend) and hatched 3 out of 12 quail eggs.

I've heard that quail eggs are a lot harder to hatch than chickens, but I think our incubator could've done some damage too.
