Perhaps I need to stand guard tonight to solve the mystery. Pine marten? Never heard of it. I wonder if there any in Va.?

I did research fisher cats and listened to a recording of what they sound like. I hear that sound all the time but assumed it was a fox. All the neighbors say that's what it is and, when I listened to a recording of a fox, it sounded the same to me (as a fisher cat). Weird. First time I heard the noise way back in 1987, I thought a woman was being attacked in the woods!! Very eery and scary noise but then you get used to it. Oh, there go the foxes again, looking for a mate! Maybe it's been fisher cats all this time!!!

Connie - my dh said he saw the animal running across the backyard and that it wasn't a squirrel. I've never seen a large reddish squirrel around but I think that could be a possibility. He said it had it's tail in the air when it was running. Sounds like a squirrel to ME!!!

Aubrey - thanks for the tip. I don't know why I didn't think of it before (duh!) but I have begun bringing the feeder in at night! So HA HA whatever you are!!! Only bad thing is I'll never know what it was. Oh well. My bank account won't mind!

First of all martens and fisher cats are carnivores they will eat the chickens, garbage and such before they mess with the birdseed. Secondly, they are vicious about it like a weasel...a fisher cat is larger weasel with a very bad attitude and it sounds nothing like a fox. the scream of a fisher cat will send chills down your spine for awhile. They do not raise their tails in the air either.

The reason I know this...I had one scream at me from about 10 feet away...I nearly had a heart attack. I have foxes on my porch at night...way different sound. The fisher sounds like a child or woman screaming crossed with a sick big cat.

This is a fisher cat
