what will help keep water clean

during this hot weather , my 3-5 gal. waterer's seems to get a little slimy especially if i go two days changing the water. can i add a small amount of Clorox, to help keep it clean. most of my waterer's are metal also i have well water, not city water.

With galvanized containers, you want to be careful about anything you add to the water because of the reaction it will have with the coating on the metal. I know some folks add copper sulfate to the water to keep algae from forming.

In this heat you should give them fresh water at least once a day. I agree that most additives will cause rusting of metal waterers. Good Luck

In this hot weather I have been watering my chickens in low rectangular plastic tubs from the 99 cent store. They seem to hold maybe two gallons and the chickens can walk in them to help cool off. They are quick to dump or you can toss the water in the desired direction and fill from far away with a hose. I find the water stays pretty clean if I put it farther away from the feed and raise it up on something (like another bigger plastic tub turned upside down. I just wipe the inside off with my hand, swish around the old water and refill from a hose as I go down the line. It is quick, easy and clean and the chickens get to cool off. Plus you can see how their water looks at a glance.

You can use 3-4 drops of Clorox per gallon of water.

Make sure its the UNSCENTED.

most of the time i do change it every day, but still doesn't seem clean to me, I'm gonna try a few drops per gal.
I have plenty of water so i believe i'll also get a container as mentioned so they can wade around, that should be an entertaining sight !
