Have you noticed any strong smell around it? I recently had a skunk dig something like that in an open pasture field. Surprised me. I would have expected it to dig the hole in a woodland or someplace where the entrance was hidden.

At my collage in RI there were skunks that would dig holes like that all over the place

That looks just like the groundhog hole in our woods.
